A first-timer's guide to sim racing in Adelaide

The neon-lit floor of Sim Racing Adelaide with full motion racing rigs

So you have seen the rigs, the headsets and the big screens. Now you are wondering whether sim racing is actually for you. Short answer: yes. You do not need experience, you do not need a license and you definitely do not need to be a petrolhead. You just need to turn up and drive.

Here is exactly how a first visit to our Richmond centre works, so you walk in knowing what to expect.

You really do not need experience

This is the thing most people get wrong before their first session. They assume sim racing is for hardcore gamers with a thousand hours of practice. It is not. Our staff get you set up, walk you through the wheel and pedals, then pick a car that is easy to drive. Within a couple of laps you will be braking, turning and finding the racing line on your own.

If you can drive a shopping trolley you can drive one of our sims. The fun part is how fast you improve once you are in the seat.

What full motion actually means

A wheel clamped to a desk is fine. A full motion rig is a different sport. The whole seat moves with the car, so you feel the kerbs, the braking and that little slide when the back steps out. Your body starts reading the car the same way it would on a real track, which is why people improve faster than they expect.

The track stops being something on a screen. You feel it through the seat.

Then there is VR

Pull on a headset and the room disappears. You are sitting in the cockpit. You can look into the corner, judge your braking point and glance across at the car beside you. Pairing full motion with VR is about as close as you can get to a real car without leaving Richmond. If it is your first time, ask us and we will ease you into it.

Solo or against your mates

Coming on your own is great. Set a lap time, then spend the session chipping away at it. Coming with friends is where it gets loud. Line up on the same grid, race wheel to wheel and let the leaderboard sort out who has the bragging rights on the drive home.

Groups are easy too. Birthdays, bucks nights and work days all run well here. We can sort the whole room out for you.

What a session looks like

Book a slot, turn up a few minutes early and we will get you settled in. We sort the seating position, talk you through the controls and get you rolling. After that it is all driving. When you climb out you can compare times with whoever you came with and start plotting your next visit.

Quick tips for your first laps

Smooth beats fast at the start. A few small habits make a big difference.

  • Brake in a straight line before you turn, not halfway through the corner.
  • Look where you want to go, not at the wall you are trying to miss.
  • Be gentle with the wheel. Small inputs keep the car settled.
  • Forget your lap time for the first few laps and just get a feel for it.
